Dear Kevin, Danielle, Rob, Marie and David
Your names have been passed to me as tutors for Political Scociology. Apologies for the short notice, but I only received your names yesterday. Tutorials for Political Sociology start next week.
Mondays 4.15pm CM224 - Rob
Mondays 5.15pm CM237 - David
Thursdays 11am W205 - Kevin
Thursdays 4.15pm CM237 - Marie
Thursdays 5.15pm CM237 - Danielle
Suggested topics for discussion in first tutorial:
What is political sociology? What can sociologists add to questions of politics or international relations?
Why should sociologists be concerned with issues of power? In what ways can power be understood?
For the formative essay, the students will be asked to write a 1000 word essay on some aspect of the political sociology of the London Bombings. This could include the relation of the events to wider geopolitical issues; the question of UK security; thinking identity in Britain; sovereignty and rights; citizenship and 'the nation', etc. The deadline for the essay is Thursday 10th November, 4pm.
For the tutorial, we will ask the students to look at the three following sites
1. Home office public site on 'protecting UK' after London bombings
2. Muslim Council of Great Britain's Inayat Bunglawala:
3. Charles Clarke's speech to European Parliament on civil liberties and terrorism.
They should enable the students to reflect on the general questions above, but also to start thinking about the London bombings in particular. You are welcome to discuss other topics, but discussion of the formative essay is essential.
Yours
Prof. Bigwhig
